I am now officially 27!! 27 is such a nondescript age. Its really neither here nor there,an age not given to much thought, celebration or reflection. 28 is closer to 30 and you are really getting old..26 and you are mature having just crossed 25, but 27 is not really a milestone.
The first hour or so was spent in pleasant conversation with parents and the Little One - all in all a good start to another year. I seldom think of massive celebrations on my bday, perhaps because my friends are rather disparate and I couldn't really imagine getting them all together in the same place.
As far as parties go in Oxford - my first year was probably spent with the Little One, the second was spent with Linacre gang cooking for RM's parents and the third - cant remember -perhaps OIS gang dinner? Today, will probably be spent on the Q bank and a quiet dinner with a couple of friends.
So, cheers to another year gone by and one step closer to old age :)
This is my equivalent of scrap and doodling paper. So beware, I don't always think before I write.

My only world cup post
SL seem destined to lose to Australia today and because they are the only subcontinental team left and traitorous friends also support the team.My prediction for the semifinal line up has come true, except I thought SA might make it more comfortably, but you can never really bet on them in a WC, can you?
My viewing is restricted to bedtime BBC highlight packages which invariably put me to sleep. In fact, cant rememebr ever watching an entire package right through.
Might watch the final though, although I must admit more interesting things like snooker world championships are starting next week, and Ding plays Hendry in the first round..what a match up.
Can't wait.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Bomb attacks strike Iraqi capital
What is wrong with the world if every day people are being killed, every day without respite. Consistently, unfailingly every day.... God! It has to stop. How do people live there? Its like living in a house on the edge of a cliff not knowing whether the door opens onto a free fall.
I cant envisage living in Oxford wondering if I walk instead of cycle whether I will be less likely to be shot. The geeky side of me is now saying perhaps do a case control study to look at risk factors for death in Baghdad.. but that is insensitive and despicable, if for no other reason than for the fact that these bombs dont really discriminate based on genetic makeup.
Sick..sick..blow the whole world up..

My "futility of life" post has definitely drawn a few more responses than I have ever recieved on this blog...
Obviously, everyone seems to identify with it at some level and has given me tons of advice - from relaxing to converting my musical inclincations towards less melodious and more deafness inducing tunes.
Anyway, am feeling better now as the sun has come out and its 28 degrees or so. Am still in the lab but am leaving now to spend some time in the sun and get my tan exactly the right shade :)

I cant take it anymore. I am sick of reading my first year medical stuff and not remembering anything. What difference does it make to the world if fructose 1,6 -phosphatase is part of the gluconeogenesis cycle or glycogen synthesis cycle.
My life is entirely futile. I will write a thesis on adenoviruses and no one in the world will care about it. The only reason for writing the thesis is to get a degree which means nothing. Its like a badge of achievement which you keep collecting as you go through a life and career which finally results in meaningless, mundane existence focussed on making enough money to send your kids through college.
It might be because I am growing older or perhaps that I am doing too many things at the same time, but surely there must be more to life than writing some papers or worrying about your next job? I am slowly coming to believe that no one who is successful, as defined by present day norms, is actually happy. They are simply manic- depressives who flit between periods of contentment and bouts of frustration and despair. I wish we could just stop the world for a second and ask people where they are going and why?
Perhaps we have only one function - to procreate. simple, focused objective. procreate and make sure that your progeny survive.
Perhaps, we are here to save the world? perhaps, we are here to enjoy?what joy? perhaps, it is time to find what excites us truly and do it? Perhaps, this is my midlife crisis - my dark side,my "brooding side" as the Little One calls it? Maybe I need a delhi GK park talk? hmmm.......
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
Yeah, sure but what do I stare at?

Davenport diagram
I have finally understood the Davenport diagram to diagnose acid-base disturbances. Why dont they teach this to us properly in medical school? I am satisfied with the day's work. I would not advise wikipedia for understanding this though.

back to blogging now. This is because I shall be spending some time in front of the computer.
The big news in my sports life (this refers to my couch and TV activity) is that the first Indian at the Augusta masters played a superb first round to be even for the day. I watched him play his last two holes and despite the fact that he was one under at the 16th, he bogeyed the 17th and made par on the 18th. Impressive especially for someone playing their first masters.
No other news, except that now I have been forced to support SL in the WC. Am off to the lab now to set up some ICS and then cant wait to sit down to learn about behavioural sciences!!
